Oracle Java 8 - Possible to check if providing local content is still necessary?

Hello!

Looking at the Supported Products List (https://patchmypc.com/supported-products), there's a note for "Oracle Java 8" that it requires a manual download.

But it appears that the same product is available through Winget. Looking at the manifest from the Winget community repository (https://github.com/microsoft/winget-pkgs/blob/master/manifests/o/Oracle/JavaRuntimeEnvironment/8.0.4210.9/Oracle.JavaRuntimeEnvironment.installer.yaml), the URL listed in it is reachable, and it does not seems like it requires any kind of authentication.

Would it be possible to verify if Oracle Java 8 could download and update without having us to provide a local content?

Thanks!

We are actually going to switch this app off of local content, and are planning on doing so with the next release. The original reason for the local content was to ensure that customers didn't auto-enable the product without a license. However, we now have other controls to block auto-enable for products, so we will turn that on for Java 8, and make it not a local content product. I believe the next release is scheduled for October, additionally we are going to improve the pre-install script for that app as well.

Hello,

I would like some more information about this breaking change for Oracle Java Runtime please, what controls are introduced for the updating and how can we prevent it for happening?
We use both applications creation and updates from PMPC but we have departments that need to stay on a specific runtime version due to vendor application compatibility.

Thank you!

No additional controls are added for the updates. They will function as most other updates in the Patch My PC catalog.

Your management of the update will depend on how you deploy the update and which interface you are using to deploy the update (Cloud or Publisher; Intune, ConfigMgr or WSUS). Most of consideration will be in how you deploy the updates, which if using WSUS is going to be through ADRs. For Apps, you can choose to create a new ConfigMgr app with each update. In cloud, you can use deployment rings or just create the apps without assignments.

Another option would be:
Pause Updates: https://patchmypc.com/custom-options-available-for-third-party-updates-and-applications#pause-product-updates

Regardless, we'd be happy to help with your specific scenario, I would recommend opening a support case here and we can work with you for an optimal solution: https://patchmypc.com/technical-support
