So...
After checking out the 'Upcoming Features Overview' video that Justin posted in another thread...

It now has categories FILTERS ...!!!???

This is absolutely NOT what we had, and NOT what we want, and just NOT a good user experience!
Hiding categories under a filters pull-down is n
Please give us back the categories that you initially gave us in the original PMPC!

We need to see ALL the categories, so that we can click to expand, choose the apps within that category, then scroll down, expand the next category, choose an app or two, next category, browse, maybe not select any, next, next, next...  This works very well.  As proven by PMPC-HU!!!
Hiding filters under a pull-down just seems like a joke.  Are you trolling us?  We just don't know.
Again, a Business Directory, the Yellow Pages, never, every presents the businesses in alphanumeric order first! NO!  They're in categories!  HOW can you not see this???  Why do you not have any empathy for your users?
Many of your users made the effort to come here to ask why!  But probably most read this thread, saw the lack of replies, then the lack of empathy for us needing them, and probably just closed the forum, not bothering to type their own comment on this and other posts.  Can you please see that this frustrates us!

Again, how much real-world testing do you do?
How often do you sit down at a 'crappy' old laptop with a clean install of Windows, and go about installing the 10-15 apps that you always use, think you'll need.
If you spent ANY time doing this kind of testing, you'd know how absolutely frustratingly awful a time it is trying to find those 10-15 apps now... And you did that to us in v4.5.0.0!!!  Let alone in your new v5 with the massively expanded apps list.  If the categories where back when you first publicly released it, things would be quite different!
It's just not usable.  One of the core functions of the software is just not easy to use.  But it used to be!!!

We're not asking for anything new.
We're not asking for anything that's difficult to code.
We're not asking for anything that'll only be used in niche circumstances, by a tiny number of your users.
We're just asking for the return of the feature that you deleted.  That worked VERY, VERY well!!!  Which is part of why we loved it so much.

Please.

A simple, direct question to Justin.
When you initially created PMPC-HU, you gave us a feature set that made lots of logical sense for the job the application was created for.  We all loved it!  It's why we're here.
Why did you take some of them away from us?  If it's not to knee-cap the software, so that it doesn't complete with your paid, professional software, which you've explained, then why?
Please tell us the detailed reasons why you took away the categories in v4.5.0.0
Why?
All of us, your users (see above), would like to know.

No..."all of us" would not like to know, or care.

Just stop...you don't speak for all users, so shut the hell up.

Your ranting posts add no value to the forums.

Hopefully, you will be banned from the forums sooner rather than later.

Yeah, i shouldn't have said it like that. My bad.

So, Justin.
Many of your users, of which, it's likely only a tiny fraction made the effort to come to these forums, comment on this post, and in other posts, we'd like to know: why did you removed the categories from v4?

And to OldNavyGuy, I genuinely would like to know which other bit of software you moved on to.  It's always good to have options.  Cryptic hits will do.

But yes, i will keep trying and get a core functionality restored in PMPC, which Justin had initially logically blessed us with.
Every one of their users benefits from this.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I want to acknowledge that we've heard the feedback around category grouping in the Home Updater.

To @topbanana:

We appreciate that you care about the product, but the way it's been communicated isn't OK. You've made multiple posts that were rude, sarcastic, and unproductive. Since it's clear this isn't impacting other users in the same way, as seen in replies like OldNavyGuy's, and given that others are now feeling the need to speak up, we're issuing a 14-day ban. We've ignored most of the unhelpful comments until now, but this has gone too far.

If you had described clearly what you wanted and the value it brings, it would have been much more useful. For example, we already created a public feature request here: 📌 Home Updater: Group Applications by Category in Home Updater (App Library Tab)

This is where feedback like yours should go, and it's the best way for us to track and prioritize ideas.

To @OldNavyGuy:

I appreciate you stepping in. Just to update you, we're also working on bringing back-only download mode, so stay tuned for progress there if that tips the scales for Home Updater. I wish you the best either way, even if it doesn't, I hope the new tool is meeting your needs!

We're always open to feedback. Let's just keep it respectful so we can focus on building something great.

OldNavyGuy

"we're also working on bringing back-only download mode"

I'll look forward to testing it when released.

Thanks.

@OldNavyGuy would you just forsee this download-only mode changing the "Install" to "Download"?

MerlinTheGreat

@Justin Chalfant (Patch My PC) : Concerning the Download only option.

In my opinion it would be clearer to the user if the apps were marked installed when they are effectively installed, otherwise no marking.
Allways use the selection box for selecting an app.
Place a radiobutton set or a combobox at the top next to 'App Library' where the user can select 'Install' or 'Download only'.
If 'Install' is selected, you can disable the selection checkboxes for the allready installed updates/apps.
If 'Download only' is selected enable all checkboxes so that every single app can be selected for downloading, whether the update/app is installed or not.
See the added (altered) screenshot for an example.

Just my 2 cents.

Justin,

I would do a global option for download-only...similar to v4.

Simplest thing that would work.

Other permutations, such as a right-click on a specific app for download only/install only...depending on how the global option is set...could be added in later releases.

It would keep the UI cleaner.
