I initially thought that the new outdated apps notifications were working reliably, because I didn't see a notification for an outdated app (Chrome) in the Windows Notification Center (WNC) on my desktop computer. This is a computer that I mainly connect to via a network share to upload documents for storage. I've had the latest version with the notification feature installed on the desktop and this morning I didn't see any notification in the WNC, but thought I'd launch PMPC to see there were any outdated apps and saw that Chrome was outdated.
This evening while on my laptop (with the latest version of PMPC installed) I got an outdated app notification and decided to let the pop-up clear to see if there was a persistent notification in the WNC and there wasn't. And then I got a 2nd PMPC notification and was able to capture a screenshot.
So I think what must have happened on my desktop, which is waken-up and switched to hibernation by a scheduler app from 7 pm to midnight daily, is that the PMPC notification event did occur probably multiple times, but there wasn't a persistent notification in the WNC.
I've attached a couple screenshots showing that the Windows notification bell turns blue, when the PMPC notification is displayed, but clears when the PMPC notification clears. I'm also attaching a screenshot of my Windows notification settings for PMPC.
Thanks for taking the time to test this and share all the details with screenshots. That helps a lot.
Just to clarify, Patch My PC Home Updater doesn't currently post notifications to the Windows Notification Center. It uses a simple balloon notification that pops up for about 10 seconds by default and then disappears. That's why you don't see a persistent notification in the Windows Notification Center after it clears.
We're planning to increase that display time to 30 seconds in the next build so there's more time to notice it. We may also look at switching to the Windows Notification Center in the future so notifications can persist longer and be more consistent across devices.
