Version 5 does not honor scaling settings for laptop

Version 5 does not seem to be DPI-aware.

It is compressing columns in the apps list, and when manually sized, does not offer a horizontal scroll bar to see the columns out of view.

The top selection "App Library" is partially overlayed by "My Apps".

OldNavyGuy

Doesn't look like I can edit the first post...

Ran the Compatibility Troubleshooter on the executable, and tested with "Scaling on high DPI".

Did not fix the issue.

Windows 10 22H2.

This is weird! I'm using 200% DPI at 4K and never faced this issue!
Can you please send us a screeenshot and tell us what's exactly the resolution that you are using and at what percentage of DPI?

OldNavyGuy

Resolution is 1366 x 768, and 125% scaling.

No issues with any other app.

Windows 10 22H2.

It is weird, but I uninstalled version 5 on 2 machines, and will go back to version 4 until the next release.

Someone else will probably pop up with a similar issue.

Omar (Patch My PC)

1366 x 768 is already extremely small :) The DPI is mainly for high resolutions on small screens! Doing 125% on 768p will create issues everywhere, not just in our home updater! but we will look into this :)

OldNavyGuy

1366 x 768 is the recommended display resolution for this particular laptop.

And, no...it doesn't create issues everywhere.

Scaling at 125% works well for all other apps on that system.

Could you send a screenshot of how it looks in this resolution at 125%.

I tried resizing too, but no luck with the horizontal scroll.

Here's how 720p looks for me @OldNavyGuy, is yours not usable in the latest builds?

I am no longer using PMPC.

From the replies to your user in this thread, and the replies to other posts... it just sounds like you don't really do much testing of this new version... Not just code functionality testing, but real world testing!?!?!?  Which is horrifying, disheartening, frustrating.

Many years ago, you created a wonderful, extremely useful tool for home users, for IT professionals when they're not at work.  This, very logically, implies that it would be used on a very, very wide range of hardware, of every price bracket.  It's not your professional offering, that would commonly be used on company issued hardware, which is replaced every 3 years or so.  The typical swarm of ThinkPads...  (of which, i own a few! No surprises!)

Don't any of you use this at HOME, yourselves?
Don't any of you have family, friends, that need help with their old PCs and crappy Laptops?
Don't any of you have PMPC-HU and a cache of installers on a USB-Stick, or network share?  So you can update that random selection of hardware your family/friend have?
Don't you ever do clean installs of Windows, and have to install your standard load out?

So, perhaps we're doing the testing for you?

If so, here's my real-world test report:
6 days ago, i had a very typical little job to do.
My mate had old dirty laptop that they wanted to use to play footie on their restaurant tv, with the help of a VPN.
It was a crappy intel n CPU, no dGPU, 2 (TWO!) GB or RAM, 500GB HDD(!), 14" 768p screen, etc. etc. etc.  Plus a huge amount of dust, fluff, dried out thermal paste.
So yeah, disassembly, cleaning, repasting, adding 8GB stick of RAM, sadly no SSD to swap in...
Then clean install Windows 11 with the help of Rufus, debloat it some, turn off bling like animation, transparency, etc.
Then comes PatchMyPC - Home Updater....
With v4.2.0.5, it would have been a simple task of mapping my shared drive, running it, changing the cache location (annoying we had to do this, should be in the .ini, should be possible to select a mapped drive!), and then rapidly rattling through each of the different categories, selecting the standard load out...
Browser:
   Chrome
   Firefox
Multimedia
   MPC-HC
File Archivers:
   7-Zip
   WinRAR
Utilities:
   ClassicShell
   TeraCopy
Documents:
   SamatraPDF
etc. etc. etc. etc...

All this would take me seconds.  And as i'd be doing this with a mixture of pattern recognition, muscle memory, etc. i'd be able to install that standard build out selection without thinking, and would rarely miss any off.  The only 'problem' categories being 'Utilities', which was just too damn big, and took time, effort to scan down.
PMPC would find all the cached installers, and if any app had a newer version, it'd download that, updating the cached app for me!  It'd install them just fine.
All this was quick and easy...

But it wasn't like that this time.
With v5, i had to first install it from my mapped network drive.  Then head to the hilarously spaced out unfriendly Settings page, scroll down miles, pas the 10 option to set it to NOT delete the installers, and to set the cache location to that network drive, which is still difficult, as it refuses to show mapped drive letters, so we have to type in the \\server\ name to list the shares...
Then the horrific task of slowly scrolling down a HUGE long list of apps (which is otherwise a good thing) but without the categories that logically sorted them... And the triple line spacing and dividing lines making it very difficult to scan down the names of all the apps, sorted in alphabetical order... now i have to actually remember every name, of every app i need, to scroll down to it, OR read every app name to jog my memory...  Needless to say, i selected a bunch of apps, which the did install as i went along (a welcome advancement!), and closed PMPC... But then later had to reopen it, to grab a couple more apps that i'd forgotten.
Just going through the 500+ app list is actually hard work... It makes your brain ache!  It's not 'nice' to have to do.  Alphanumeric sorting is just completely illogical.  Punishing.
Eventually, i got the job done.  Windows 11 ran just fine after the looooooong job of updating it and fighting PMPC.  When running just one thing, doing one thing at a time, like Chrome, old hardware is perfectly fine.  And will continue to be for years to come.

Oh, and back to the small laptop screen... the right-most column, under search and summary, is just too long! So it too has a scroll bar!!!  Which also makes it look like it's 10 pages long!

PMPC v4 worked flawlessly of all these low resolution laptop screens, and the 1080p screens with 125% scaling.  It crammed everything in very comfortably.

So yeah.
Please do some real-world testing...  say, at HOME.  As, as the name implies, this is where it's commonly used.

(Seems like this forum doesn't like long posts, eh?)
